| Day 13 Photo Album |
September 15, 2009
The landscape is a never-ending wonder, always so many things I’d love to see and investigate. For now I have to skim the surface and enjoy what I can. My stop in Elko brought some real quality time with my cousin, and his wealth of knowledge and experience in this area. If I ever wanted to learn how to truly live in the wild, I’d count on him for my teacher.
We spent the morning in the Ruby Mountains east of Elko with his dog, Chickadee. She’s an Australian Blue Healer Stumptail with some Dingo and Border Collie. It feels like the high mountains I knew in Colorado with a touch of something canyon-like. Here you can stay on the plains and deserts but also drive into the mountains in a very short time. The best of both worlds at your doorstep.
With regret I had to set out for my next destination, Reno, around midday. The weather was brilliant and not much wind. It stayed a consistent 85 degrees the whole day.
The land is constantly rising and falling, reminding you that these are mountain ranges and your elevation is around 5,000 feet at the level places. I finally figured out that the ranges with flat tops and multiple gullies down the sides remind me of your fingers when they get puckered up after a bath. This revelation came about because my fingers are puckered quite often when I’m driving, I guess I need more water!
As the sun got dangerously close to blinding level, I reached my Aunt and Uncle’s beautiful home in Reno. It is set up along the side of a mountain facing west. A community of quails live in the shrubs in the back yard with the goldfinches and jays.
Here I’ll rest a day or two and enjoy more quality time with family, seeing the sights around Reno.
