Reno and Lake Tahoe

Day 14 Photo Album

September 16, 2009

High on a hill south of Reno is a haven of tranquility, the home of my aunt and uncle. A quiet neighborhood of homes built by people who hoped for open spaces and no congestion. Twenty-five years ago they had wide open land between them and Reno. But time marched through with more and more development and now, homes fill the empty spaces. Still, it is peaceful and beautiful. The heat of the day is managed by ingenious shades that roll along on tracks devised by my uncle and a powerful attic fan.

Strangely, I was quite cool in the 80 and 90 degree heat. The dryness of this desert agrees with my circulation.

A different definition of mountains has entered my perception. We are at an elevation of about 5,000 feet and the mountains are about 8,000 plus in various places. Some are devoid of trees and others are covered with the familiar pines and spruces. The ski resorts are across the valley from the house. But to me, they feel like the desert floor rising up in waves.

Lake Tahoe is perfectly still and exceptionally deep, so if a boat traverses the water, it leaves a path, as if it has cut a path in ice or snow. The water is also exceptionally clear and near the shore is turquoise. The town works very hard to keep the water clean.

Carson City is south of Reno and is the state capitol, a quiet, understated town.

Of course, gambling is everywhere. We ate in Reno in a casino. Lots of flashing and ding-ding-dinging. I found a dime under the table and saved it for the slot machines tomorrow.

Mostly I am enjoying the tranquil company of my aunt and uncle. Catching up on our lives, telling stories, and laughing quite a lot. Another rich encounter with my family.
